Human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate all cabinet members and appointees who served during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Olajengbesi, Managing Partner of the Abuja-based law firm Law Corridor, emphasized the necessity of this probe in light of revelations emerging from the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
In a statement, Olajengbesi commended the EFCC for uncovering the alleged forgery of Buhari’s and former Secretary General of the Federation Boss Mustapha’s signatures by Emefiele, who is embroiled in a $6.2 million fraud case.
“The EFCC must not halt at just investigating former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele but should conduct a comprehensive audit of key figures who served under the Buhari administration,” Olajengbesi stated.
He further highlighted the recent case of the suspended Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo, as indicative of widespread abuse of power during Buhari’s tenure.
Olajengbesi stressed the need for accountability and urged that Emefiele and others who served under the previous administration be thoroughly audited to address the systemic corruption observed during that time.
In the ongoing trial, three witnesses, including an EFCC official, a forensic document examiner, and a deputy director at the apex bank, have testified against Emefiele, alleging forgery and fraudulent activities related to the $6.2 million transaction.
