President Bola Tinubu has put forth a proposal to the Senate regarding the salaries and allowances for judicial office holders across Nigeria. In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpiabio, and read during plenary on Wednesday, Tinubu outlined the details of the proposal titled “Transmission of Judicial Office Holders’ Salaries and Allowances Bill, 2024.
In accordance with the provisions of section 58, sub Section two of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended,” Tinubu wrote, “I forward herein, the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill, 2024, for the kind consideration of the Senate.
Tinubu emphasized that the bill aims to address the prolonged stagnation in the remuneration of judicial officials and align their salaries and allowances with contemporary socioeconomic realities. He highlighted the importance of establishing a new legal framework to ensure significant improvements in the welfare, capacity, and independence of judicial officials.
While I hope that the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill 2024 will be carefully, yet expeditiously, considered and passed by the Senate,” Tinubu concluded, “please accept, distinguished Senate President, and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest esteem.
This proposal signals Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing the welfare and effectiveness of judicial officers, thereby reinforcing the judiciary’s crucial role in the nation’s legal system.
