The death toll resulting from a stampede at the venue of a Zakaat almsgiving event in Bauchi state on Sunday, March 24, has climbed to seven, with the addition of three more women reported deceased.
According to the report, the stampede occurred around 10 am at the Shafa Holdings Company plc headquarters along Jos Road during the distribution of Zakaat items, organized by a philanthropist based in Bauchi.
Initially, the distribution proceeded smoothly, with women beneficiaries being called in groups to receive items. However, restlessness among some attendees escalated into a struggle for access to the premises.
Providing an update on the incident, SP Ahmed Wakili, the spokesperson of the state police command, revealed in an interview with journalists on Monday that two more women succumbed to their injuries at the Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), while the third woman passed away at home.
The casualties were identified as Aisha Usman, 13; Sahura Abubakar, 55; Aisha Ibrahim Abubakar, 43; Kobi Street Bauchi; Khadija Isah, 8; Karofi Bauchi; Maryam Suleiman, 20, of Kandahar Bauchi; Maryam Shuibu, 16, of Gwang Gwan Gwan Bauchi; and Hassana Saidu, 53, of Dutsen Tanshi Bauchi.
