A portion of the 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains allocated by the Federal Government to alleviate the food crisis in Nigeria has reached at least eight states, with distribution ongoing across the nation.
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security confirmed that the grains have been delivered to states including Kano, Kwara, Kogi, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba, among others.
Sule Haruna, the Director of Food and Strategic Reserve at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, stated that they are working in collaboration with government partner agencies to fulfill President Bola Tinubu’s directive regarding the distribution of the food supplies to states.
President Tinubu had ordered the release of 42 metric tonnes of grains from the national reserves to address the food crisis, further supplemented by an agreement with the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria to release an additional 60 metric tonnes, totaling 106 metric tonnes of grains.
Haruna emphasized that distribution is ongoing to all states and the Federal Capital Territory, despite concerns over people attempting to intercept the commodities during transportation.
He assured that while details are being handled cautiously, the grains have been dispatched to various states including Kano, Yola, Kogi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba, and Ebonyi.
Furthermore, the Kano State Government recently received 162 trucks of grains from the Federal Government, consisting of rice, sorghum, millet, and maize, alongside additional donations from the Dangote Foundation.
Sanusi Tofa, the Director General of Media and Publicity in Kano State, announced that the state government is also contributing 145 trucks of assorted grains for distribution across its local government areas and wards.
