Expressing worry, the Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress highlighted the issue of non-remittance of pension contributions totaling ₦75bn in the state.
During the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, Kabiru Inuwa, the state NLC chairman, revealed that certain organizations in Kano have a significant backlog of pension contributions, amounting to over ₦75bn as of May 2023.
Inuwa emphasized the detrimental impact of this backlog on the financial security of retirees, citing deductions in pension payments and incomplete disbursements over the years.
While acknowledging the commencement of full pension payments by Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration, the NLC urged all defaulting government institutions to initiate payments to clear the backlog and facilitate the settlement of retirement and death benefits.
Inuwa expressed optimism that with a comprehensive analysis of the backlog and a robust recovery strategy in place, the accrued benefits could be settled within a few years.
Governor Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Gwarzo, reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to the welfare of workers in Kano State.
