The Zamfara State Internal Revenue Service (ZSIRS) has announced that tenement rate payments should no longer be made to local government councils, as the board now exclusively handles the collection of these rates.
This announcement was made by the Executive Chairperson of ZSIRS, Hajiya Rakiya Ahmed Dodo, during her weekly program on Zamfara Radio, “Da Ruwan Ciki.” Representing her, the Director of Information and Intelligence Gathering, Alhaji Hadi Bawa Gusau, emphasized the need for this change, noting that Zamfara State collects the lowest revenue among states in the federation.
The Executive Chairperson urged all eligible tenement rate payers to support and comply with the Internal Revenue Service to enhance the state’s revenue generation.
She explained that the tenement rate is a tax impacting all commercial activities, including business premises such as filling stations, banks, plazas, bakeries, block industries, oil mills, rented houses, and companies.
Alhaji Mas’ud Wada, an expert and official from the Zamfara State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, supported the decision. He highlighted the importance of centralizing the collection of tenement rates under the State Internal Revenue Service, relieving local councils from this responsibility.
Wada noted that this move is expected to improve revenue collection, which will in turn fund developmental projects across both local government areas and the state.
