Kano CP Stand Off with Gov Yusuf Over Deposed Emir’s Eviction

Kano State Police Commissioner, AIG Usaini Gumel, has provided reasons for the police’s decision to ignore Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to evict the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

Governor Yusuf, through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, had instructed the Police Commissioner on Thursday night to remove the deposed Emir from the Nasarawa mini palace, where he is currently residing.

In an interview with the news men on Friday, Commissioner Gumel explained that following the governor’s eviction order would be premature. He highlighted that the government had already filed a case at the State High Court regarding the eviction, which is scheduled for a hearing on Monday, June 24, 2024.

“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024. If we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” Gumel stated.

Meanwhile, security has been significantly increased around the Nasarawa mini palace. All four major routes leading to the palace have been blocked by security personnel, while the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, remains inside with his retinue of palace guards and supporters.

A supporter of Bayero, speaking anonymously to The Punch, confirmed that the Emir is still receiving “traditional greetings” from loyal traditional rulers within the mini palace. The supporter also dismissed rumors circulating on social media about a bulldozer being stationed at the palace for its demolition, labeling such claims as “social media propaganda.”

Despite the governor’s directive, the police have maintained their stance, awaiting the outcome of the court proceedings set for Monday. This situation has heightened tensions in the area as residents and supporters of the deposed Emir watch closely to see how events will unfold.
