The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has been urged to resign immediately by the Coalition for Defence of Justice and Rule of Law, a civil society group.
In a statement on Sunday, Mohammed Bello, a representative of the coalition, accused the governor of blatantly disregarding the rule of law. This call comes after Governor Yusuf’s failure to comply with a court ruling that annulled the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido as the Emir of Kano.
Bello highlighted that the recent judgment by Justice Abdullahi Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano was a clear denunciation of Governor Yusuf’s actions, deeming them illegal and unconstitutional.
The coalition warned, “Should the governor refuse to resign, Nigerians will hold him accountable for any ensuing issues in Kano. We will occupy the Kano Government House, Kano House in Abuja, and other strategic locations to protest his continued tenure.”
They urged the people of Kano to stay calm and peaceful amid the crisis, assuring them of ongoing monitoring and actions to uphold justice and the rule of law.
Bello criticized Governor Yusuf for ignoring the court’s decision and continuing to disrespect the judiciary and traditional institutions. He stated, “This blatant disregard for the rule of law indicates that Governor Yusuf is unfit for office.”
The coalition also condemned the governor’s first year in office, citing a campaign of intimidation, harassment, and persecution of perceived opponents, including Emir Ado Bayero. They asserted that Governor Yusuf has betrayed the trust of Kano State’s people and that his continued governance undermines democratic institutions and threatens the state’s stability.
