Ambassador Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has asserted that he will not be intimidated into resigning from his position, despite mounting internal pressures. Damagum’s statement comes amidst ongoing internal disputes within the PDP, which have plagued the party both before and after the 2023 elections.
In recent months, Damagum has found himself at the center of criticism from various factions within the party. Some party members have accused him of exacerbating the party’s crises, particularly after the PDP’s underwhelming performance in the general elections. “Let me send a message to everyone talking about ‘Damagum this, Damagum that’ – I cannot be intimidated. The more you mention me, the more popular I become,” Damagum asserted. He further hinted at the possibility of leveraging this newfound recognition to consider a run for the presidency, underscoring his determination to turn challenges into opportunities.
Damagum made these remarks during the inauguration of the National Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees, an event that underscores the PDP’s ongoing efforts to address internal divisions. The committees, chaired by prominent party figures Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Tom Ikimi, are tasked with mending rifts within the party and ensuring discipline among its ranks.
The PDP Chairman expressed his frustration with individuals who, according to him, lack a proper understanding of the workings of the National Working Committee (NWC) but continue to disseminate misinformation to the public. Damagum’s comments signal a firm stance against both internal and external forces seeking to destabilize his leadership.
