Around 20 members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) have drowned while attempting to cross a river along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border. The incident occurred between the Kafetoa and Bulabulin Gaidam communities in Yobe State, Nigeria, according to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.
The insurgents were reportedly en route to the Tam village in Niger Republic, near the Kannamma settlement in Yobe, when strong currents swept them away, leading to their deaths.
Makama explained that the militants had been displaced from key strongholds, including Bulabulin Geidam, Chettimari, and Diffan, all located along the Nigeria-Niger border.
ISWAP has been a key player in the insurgency across Nigeria’s northeastern region. Recently, the group has faced mounting pressure from intensified Nigerian military operations aimed at curbing their activities.
In a separate attack, Boko Haram, a faction related to ISWAP, killed several civilians and set shops and homes ablaze in a Yobe village, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region.
