The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has elected Yusuf Kibiya, a former Commissioner for Agriculture under Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s administration, as the new chairman of the party. Kibiya served in Kwankwaso’s cabinet between 1999 and 2003.
The announcement was made by the chairman of the PDP Election Committee, Halilu Mazagani, who declared Kibiya the winner after he secured an overwhelming 3,964 votes, defeating his opponent, Nura Nuhu, who received 244 votes.
Mazagani praised the party officials for successfully conducting the election, describing it as a significant step towards resolving internal party disputes. He expressed optimism that the PDP would emerge stronger and more unified, positioning itself as a formidable opposition to the ruling party.
“Our party, being the largest in Africa, naturally faces internal challenges, but we have consistently demonstrated the ability to manage our differences. I can assure you that we are working tirelessly to ensure unity and are mobilizing like never before to secure victory in the upcoming 2027 general elections. I believe the people will once again place their trust in us,” Mazagani said.
He added that the PDP’s focus would now be on presenting credible candidates, as it aims to build on its previous successes.
Former Kano State governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, also addressed the gathering, expressing confidence that the party would produce a winning team for the 2027 elections. He emphasized that the PDP is prepared to challenge any political party, including in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024.
