A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria has affirmed that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) complied with electoral guidelines in the recent local government elections.
During the presentation of their report, the convener of the network, Victor Kalu, commended KANSIEC for what he described as an impressive turnout and adherence to electoral guidelines throughout the process. He applauded the Kano State government and KANSIEC, under the leadership of Prof. Sani Malumfashi, for conducting a well-organized and successful election.
In response, Prof. Malumfashi expressed his gratitude to the CSOs, highlighting the significance of their role in ensuring the elections were conducted smoothly. “Your presence added immense value to the recently concluded local government elections,” he stated. “We recognize your contributions towards the election’s success. Please continue the struggle of entrenching democracy in Nigeria—one day it will be better for us in this country.” He also praised the CSOs for their vigilance in upholding the constitutional mandate.
Following the collation exercise, KANSIEC declared that the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) won all 44 local government chairmanship positions and 484 councillorship seats contested. Six political parties participated in the elections, including AA, AAC, ACCORD, ADC, APM, and NNPP.
Prof. Malumfashi emphasized that the state electoral body had fully exercised its constitutional responsibilities in planning, organizing, coordinating, and conducting the elections. He described the exercise as peaceful and successful, attributing this to the collaborative roles of various stakeholders, including security agencies, media, political leaders, religious and community leaders, as well as youth and women’s organizations.
He concluded by expressing profound appreciation to the people of Kano for their participation. “The peaceful conduct of the exercise is an undeniable manifestation of public support and confidence in the process, ensuring its credibility, fairness, and decency,” Prof. Malumfashi added.
