In a move towards enhancing local government autonomy, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has terminated the joint account system previously shared between the state government and the 13 local government areas (LGAs). The change, which aligns with a recent Supreme Court ruling supporting financial independence for the country’s 774 LGAs, is expected to empower local governments to pursue their own developmental projects.
The announcement was made by Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Sule on Public Affairs, during a media briefing in Lafia, the state capital. Ahemba highlighted the governor’s commitment to lawful governance and accountability, stating that the dissolution of the joint account system reflects the Sule administration’s dedication to transparency.
“Governor Sule is a leader who prioritizes accountability and adheres strictly to the rule of law. The decision to eliminate the joint account system underscores his commitment to openness,” Ahemba stated.
In addition to promoting local autonomy, the state government has also committed to implementing the new ₦70,000 minimum wage recently signed into law by the federal government. According to Ahemba, Governor Sule had initially intended to roll out the wage increment along with a three-month salary arrears payment in August. However, at the request of organized labor, the implementation was postponed to prioritize the execution of employee promotions.
“With the successful implementation of the promotions, the state government is now ready to begin discussions on the new minimum wage,” Ahemba confirmed, assuring workers that the administration remains dedicated to improving their welfare.
Beyond labor matters, the governor’s aide reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents through expanded infrastructure development and substantial investments in agriculture. The state aims to tackle hunger and poverty by bolstering food production, which remains a key component of its economic strategy.
Governor Sule’s actions mark a progressive step towards greater local governance, with local governments now poised to exercise increased financial control to drive growth and development within their jurisdictions.
