Sheikh Maikwano Accuses Zamfara Clerics Of Inciting Rebellion Against Govt

Sheikh Maikwano’s accusations against religious scholars in Zamfara state are rooted in a conflict that has been brewing between them and the government. The Sheikh, a prominent figure in the region, voiced his concerns after the disagreement between the Zamfara government and some religious scholars who were responsible for overseeing the development of Islamic Shari’a in the state.

Among the scholars criticized by Sheikh Maikwano are prominent figures such as Malam Aliyu Aminu (Modibbon Zamfara), Sheikh Umar Kanoma, Malam Aliyu Sani Jangebe, and Dr. Atiku Balarabe Zawiyya. He accused them of actions that he believed were contrary to the teachings of Islam, backing his claims with references from the Quran, hadith, and the statements of past scholars.

The Sheikh specifically called on Malam Aliyu Aminu to remember past events that led to the establishment of a committee to investigate a scandal. He questioned Malam Aliyu Sani Jangebe about the handling of money given to scholars of tafsir during Ramadan. He challenged these scholars to respond to these inquiries.

Maikwano alleged that these religious scholars were not only humiliating the government but also insulting the newly-elected Governor Dauda, who had been in office for less than five months. He questioned why they were in such a rush to criticize and discredit the governor in the eyes of the public.

He emphasized that the merging of ministries was not a crime and did not discredit the Sharia law. Maikwano pointed out that the Saudi government had recently merged ministries, citing the suspension of the work of the prominent religious scholar Sheikh Sudais as an example. He urged those blaming Governor Dauda to also consider the Saudi government’s decisions.

Sheikh accused Malam Aliyu Aminu of bias, citing an incident during Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi’s government. Members of the PDP party challenged him, as he had previously referred to PDP members as infidels, yet he had now joined the party. They inquired about his stance. He responded that his presence in the PDP does not undermine Islamic Sharia. He explained that it would be akin to the state house of assembly enacting Sharia as law, which only the legislators in the assembly could change. Maikwano questioned why the Zamfara scholars were accusing Governor Dauda of forsaking Sharia when he hadn’t sought to repeal the law in the state house of assembly.

He also criticized the council of scholars for failing to effectively advise the governor and resorting to criticism. Maikwano regarded their behavior as hypocritical and a betrayal of trust.

Sheikh Maikwano revealed that he had heard about the scholars’ plan to hold a sermon meeting to discuss the achievements and development of Islamic Sharia in Zamfara state. He advised them to acknowledge both their achievements and mistakes in the ministries they had led.
