In a significant move aimed at easing travel burdens during the upcoming yuletide season, President Bola Tinubu has granted approval for a 50% reduction in the prices of interstate transport fare for all Nigerians. The initiative is set to be in effect from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.
This announcement was made by Mr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, during a press briefing at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday. He disclosed that commuters would also enjoy free rides on all train services throughout the designated period.
According to Alake, “Commencing from tomorrow, December 21, Nigerians planning to travel can avail themselves of public transport services, including mini buses and luxury buses, at a 50% discount on the current costs. Additionally, all train services operating on their designated routes will be offered at zero cost during this holiday season.”
To ensure the smooth implementation of this special presidential intervention, Alake stated that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, would collaborate closely with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
He emphasized, “All relevant stakeholders in the transportation industry have been engaged and briefed on the parameters. The Minister of Transportation possesses comprehensive details and is well-prepared to execute this special presidential initiative seamlessly. Meetings with the Presidents of various transport unions have taken place, and all aspects of execution are in top shape.”
However, Alake clarified that air travel would not be included in this initiative, as it primarily targets the masses. He stated, “The initiative is intended for the masses, and air travel is considered a luxury. As the masses predominantly use ground transport, they are our main focus.”
