After gaining independence, Nigeria witnessed several military interventions in its political system, with uniformed personnel leading the nation for an extended period until 1999.
Among the military leaders during that era was Babangida, who held power for eight years, from 1985 to 1993. In a recent interview with Channels Television’s Inside Sources, the former military chief discussed the consequences of military meddling, emphasizing its role in hindering the achievement of true federalism.
Babangida expressed confidence that such interference is now a thing of the past. He pointed out that the desire for a genuinely democratic country has grown among Nigerians, and he believes that military involvement in politics will not recur.
“I think the failure to achieve true federalism was one of the consequences of the aberration during the military regime; it disrupted the democratic process. Such incidents happened, but I am optimistic that they will not be repeated because Nigerians are increasingly committed to establishing a truly democratic nation in Africa,” Babangida stated.
