In a startling development, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has taken decisive action, suspending the admission of 10,378 candidates who participated in the 2023 Direct Entry examination. This unprecedented move stems from the failure of their A-level issuing institutions to submit verification reports to JAMB. Following JAMB’s earlier advisory regarding the use of unacceptable or forged A-level certificates for admission, affected candidates were urged to swiftly contact their former institutions for certificate verification, underscoring that unverified certificates would not be entertained.
Despite concerted efforts by numerous tertiary institutions, a staggering 240 schools, predominantly polytechnics and colleges of education, neglected to furnish verification reports, prompting the suspension of admissions for over 10,000 candidates. The Nigeria Post-secondary Education Data System (NIPEDS) conducted rigorous verification exercises to combat malpractice and discrepancies in the 2023 Direct Entry admission process.
This development underscores the critical importance of institutions facilitating the verification of A-level certificates for their students. Notably, candidates holding certificates from institutions yet to respond to the verification process will remain ineligible for admission until their credentials are duly authenticated.
Among the institutions with the highest number of unverified A-level results are Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1,314 candidates); Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (611); Aminu Saleh College of Education (269); College of Education, Minna (248); Federal College of Education, Okene (164); Federal College of Education, Kotangora (164); Federal College of Education, Abeokuta (383 candidates), and others.
Additionally, JAMB has issued a stern warning, declaring that admissions will not be granted to students seeking entry into universities from 245 identified schools unless they comply with the new verification system introduced in 2023. This stringent measure aims to curb the use of counterfeit pre-secondary school results in university scholarship applications. All results assessed under the new Certificate Verification system have been meticulously cataloged in JAMB’s repository, known as NIPEDS, ensuring transparency and integrity in the admissions process.
