Police Arrests Popular Kannywood Actress, Amal Umar

The Kano State Police Command has brought charges against a well-known Kannywood actress, Amal Umar, in Magistrates’ Court No 24, Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano. The charges stem from an alleged incident where she purportedly tried to bribe a police officer.

According to the prosecutor, Amal Umar’s purported attempt to bribe a police officer was to impede an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misappropriation involving her boyfriend, identified as Ramadan Inuwa.

The prosecutor cited Section 118 of the Penal Code, which prohibits the bribery of a police officer, as the basis for the charges.

The police intervened and apprehended the actress, presenting documentary evidence of the alleged bribery attempt, leading to her subsequent arraignment before the Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The case originated from a complaint filed by Alhaji Yusuf Adamu, represented by his lawyer, H.I. Dederi, to Assistant Inspector General Umar Mohd Sanda on August 18, 2022. The complaint outlined allegations of financial misappropriation amounting to N40 million by Ramadan Inuwa in his cell phone business.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that N13 million had been transferred to Umar’s bank account by Inuwa.

CSP Bashir Muhammed, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 1, Kano, revealed that the actress was questioned and granted bail but was not allowed to leave in a car allegedly purchased by her boyfriend.

Umar admitted that the money in her bank account belonged to her boyfriend but claimed he only transferred N8 million.

After being granted bail, Umar sought legal recourse by petitioning the High Court of Kano State to halt further police investigations.

The court temporarily restrained the police from continuing their investigation, allegedly giving Umar the opportunity to attempt to bribe the police investigator, ASP Salisu Bujama.
