Kaduna Govt Announces Relocation of 359 Schools Over Security Issues

Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani voiced concern on Wednesday over the declining enrolment of pupils in schools across the state, attributing it to rising insecurity from activities like kidnapping and banditry.

In response, the government has initiated plans to relocate 359 schools from high-risk areas to safer locations and integrate them with existing schools.

Speaking at a capacity-building programme organized by the Nigeria Police Force School Protection Squad in Kaduna, Sani emphasized the urgent need to address security challenges affecting education.

He highlighted recent incidents such as the kidnapping of 135 students from a school in Chikun Local Government Area, underscoring the detrimental impact of insecurity on education access and safety.

Sani noted a significant decrease in school enrolment, particularly in conflict-affected areas, with over 200,000 fewer primary school pupils recorded in the 2022/2023 academic session compared to the previous year.

He emphasized the need for proactive measures to address the crisis and prevent further disruptions to the educational system.

Acknowledging the efforts of the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, Sani commended the establishment of the Schools Protection Squad, aimed at enhancing security and safety in educational institutions nationwide.
