The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his silence in the face of nationwide “EndBadGovernance” protests, which have erupted due to severe economic hardship.
Amidst growing economic challenges, many Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities. In response, protests erupted on Thursday and continued into Friday across several states, including Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, and Rivers, with youths demanding an end to hunger and poor governance.
In a statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP urged President Tinubu to address the nation immediately, reassuring citizens about the government’s plans to tackle the pressing issues they face.
“The PDP demands that President Tinubu immediately address Nigerians on urgent steps to reduce the price of petroleum products, stabilize the Naira, and ensure the prompt provision of food, among other critical issues. This is necessary to revitalize the productive sector, stimulate employment, and restore stability in the polity,” the statement read.
The PDP expressed concern that the President’s silence is sending a “dangerous signal” and exacerbating public anxiety. The party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of being indifferent to the plight of citizens amid the nation’s deteriorating conditions.
“It is indeed troubling that President Tinubu remains silent while Nigerians take to the streets, demanding good governance, security, and welfare, which are the fundamental responsibilities of any government,” the statement continued.
The PDP also condemned the reported use of force by security agencies against unarmed protesters, with allegations that APC-aligned thugs were also inciting violence.
The opposition party called for an immediate investigation into the reported killing of unarmed protesters by security operatives.
“Our Party calls on President Tinubu to break his silence, address the nation, and reassure citizens on the issues causing widespread concern, particularly the reduction of petroleum and food prices,” the statement urged.
The PDP emphasized that with effective, transparent management of resources, and strategic investment in gas production, petrol prices should not exceed N200 per liter in Nigeria. The party also called for the recovery of over N50 trillion allegedly stolen by APC leaders, a reduction in tariffs on essential goods, cuts in the cost of governance, and a review of luxury spending within the government, with recovered funds redirected to programs benefiting Nigerians.
Additionally, the PDP stressed the need for security agencies to maintain professionalism in their duties and ensure the protection of citizens.
