The Ondo State Government has announced its commitment to implementing the newly approved ₦70,000 national minimum wage for its civil servants. This was disclosed by the state’s Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Philip, during a press briefing in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday.
The minimum wage increase, recently sanctioned by President Bola Tinubu following extensive negotiations with organized labor unions, will be adopted in full by the Ondo State administration, according to Mr. Philip. He emphasized that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has consistently assured that the state will align with the Federal Government’s wage policies.
Philip also mentioned that the state government plans to extend the new wage structure to retirees and employees of state-owned tertiary institutions as part of efforts to alleviate the economic challenges currently facing the country.
“Even before the President signed the bill into law, Governor Aiyedatiwa had pledged that Ondo State would implement whatever minimum wage is agreed upon at the national level,” Mr. Philip stated. “We are currently finalizing the necessary preparations, and as soon as the salary details are released, the state will proceed with the implementation without delay.”
In response to the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, Mr. Philip noted that Ondo State has remained calm, with no protests reported. He attributed this to the close relationship between the governor and the people of the state.
“Here in Ondo, there are no protests. Our youths, market women, students, and public servants are all at their posts, carrying out their duties. This is because we have a governor who understands and addresses the concerns of the people. The government in Ondo is truly a government of the people, and as such, there is no cause for protest,” he concluded.
