NERC Grants Regulatory Powers to Six States for Electricity Market

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has granted six states the authority to regulate their own electricity markets. The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in the management of electricity markets within these states.

According to a statement released by the Commission on X (formerly Twitter), the states of Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Oyo, and Edo have been authorized to oversee their electricity markets. This development follows the establishment of electricity regulatory agencies by these states, allowing them to assume full regulatory control within their respective jurisdictions.

NERC explained that this move is formalized through the “Order of Transfer of Regulatory Oversight of the Electricity Market” in the six states, effectively transferring authority from the national body to the newly established State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERC).

“These six states are now empowered to regulate their electricity markets, following the transfer of authority from NERC to their respective State Electricity Regulatory Commissions,” the statement read.

This decision builds on an earlier announcement by NERC in April, where it indicated that regulatory oversight of the electricity markets in Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, and Ondo would be transferred to the state governments effective May 1, 2024.
