The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, has mandated all organizations employing Supernumerary Police (SPY) officers to strictly comply with the newly introduced standardised uniforms for these personnel.
The directive was issued on Tuesday in Abuja during the official launch of the new SPY uniforms. Representing the IGP at the event, Mr. Bala Ciroma, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Administration and Finance, emphasized the importance of adherence to the new dress code.
“As we unveil these new uniforms and kits, all organizations utilizing SPY officers are required to adhere strictly to these standardised uniforms,” Ciroma stated. He further noted that the Force Quartermaster and state personnel will provide necessary guidance on the registration and acquisition process for the uniforms.
Additionally, the IGP has directed all Police Training Schools to incorporate the new uniform issuance model for SPY personnel.
Mr. Egbetokun highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force is actively working to prevent the unauthorized production and distribution of police uniforms, including those designated for SPY officers. He described the introduction of the standardised uniforms as a crucial step towards enhancing the professionalism and visibility of the SPY unit.
The IGP referred to Section 21(7) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended), which formally establishes the Supernumerary Police as an integral part of the Nigeria Police Force. This section defines their powers, privileges, and functions, as well as their supervision by the Force, ensuring a standardised visual identity.
According to the IGP, private organizations or government departments wishing to utilize the services of SPY officers for the protection of their properties must submit an application to the IGP as per the requirements of Section 21 of the Act.
Despite the essential role of the SPY Unit, the IGP acknowledged that the unit has struggled to establish a distinct identity due to the absence of a standardised uniform. This issue has been a significant challenge for the unit.
Upon taking office, the current police management team recognized the need to support the SPY Police Unit to strengthen security measures across the country. The introduction of these new uniforms is seen as a key step in achieving this goal.
