The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed its intention to participate in the nationwide strike action organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), scheduled to commence on September 6, 2023.
According to reports by The Spectacles, the NLC is initiating a two-day warning strike to protest against fuel subsidy removal, naira devaluation, and alleged threats made by the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, to demolish properties belonging to federal workers in the capital.
ASUU President, Osedeke Emmanuel, affirmed the union’s commitment to follow NLC’s directive regarding the planned strike, stating, “We are proud members of NLC, and as affiliates, if they declare a strike, our members will actively participate.”
He further emphasized, “The government holds the key to resolving this issue, and by doing so, they can avert the strike. If NLC proceeds with the strike, we, as an affiliate, have no alternative but to comply.”
It’s worth noting that the forthcoming strike may impact over 81 universities affiliated with ASUU, comprising 43 federal universities and 38 state universities.
