Kano-based Hausa musician, Abdul Kamal, has taken legal action against BBC Hausa Service, alleging the unauthorized use of his soundtrack in their popular program, “Daga Bakin Mai Ita’.”
Barrister Bashir Ibrahim Umar, representing the plaintiff, argued that the BBC’s use of Abdul Kamal’s soundtrack without consent could harm his future career, potentially leading people to believe he is exploiting the BBC’s track for undeserved publicity.
“We request the court to compel the BBC to pay ₦120 million in damages,” Barrister Bashir stated, urging the court to prohibit the defendant from using the track until a final verdict is reached.
Responding to the allegations, BBC’s counsel, Barrister Shakirudden Mosobalage, informed the court that the BBC had purchased the soundtrack from a company in Abuja. He requested time to provide supporting documents for their defense, a plea granted by the court.
Presiding judge Justice N.M. Inusa adjourned the case to December 12, 2023, for further proceedings.
