Ahead of an imminent panel meeting scheduled for Monday, the labor sector has adjusted its stance on the proposed N1 million minimum wage. The meeting aims to convene all stakeholders involved in negotiations, fostering discussions to reach a consensus on a new minimum wage announcement by April 1, coinciding with the expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage mandated by law.
As earlier reported by The Spectacles, Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says the new minimum wage for workers should be N1 million, said the demand is a reflection of galloping inflation in the country and the depreciation of the naira.
However, Inaugurated on January 30, 2024, by President Bola Tinubu, represented by his deputy Kashim Shettima, a 37-member panel on the new minimum wage took center stage at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.
Comprising representatives from the federal and state governments, the private sector, and organized labor, the panel is tasked with proposing a new national minimum wage for the country. With expectations high and negotiations underway, all eyes are on the upcoming discussions to see if a consensus can be reached to address the pressing issue of wage reform.
