The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is demanding explanations from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the fate of the rice pyramids launched by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022.
Debo Ologunagba, PDP’s national publicity secretary, emphasized the need for this explanation in light of the prevailing hunger and harsh economic conditions in the country.
Following a tragic stampede last week during the distribution of 25kg bags of rice by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos, resulting in seven reported deaths, Ologunagba stressed that these fatalities could have been avoided if the APC had effectively flooded the markets with the rice touted by the Buhari administration.
Ologunagba questioned the discrepancy between the promised surplus in food production, attributed to initiatives like the Anchor Borrowers Scheme from the CBN, and the current hunger crisis gripping the nation. He highlighted the apparent failure of these programs, alleging corruption and mismanagement.
He further pressed the APC government to clarify the whereabouts of the rice pyramid and address the pressing issue of hunger in the country. Additionally, he called for urgent action to tackle insecurity, which hampers agricultural activities and exacerbates the food crisis.
The PDP spokesperson urged the government to prioritize addressing hunger by declaring a state of emergency, warning of the potential consequences of widespread desperation and frustration.
