Protesters flooded the premises of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja on Friday, demanding the reopening of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of funds by former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.
The group, expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the case, urged the EFCC to intensify efforts to ensure justice prevails.
Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC Director of Public Affairs, received the protesters’ petition on behalf of Chairman Ola Olukoyede.
Uwujaren reassured the demonstrators of the commission’s commitment to vigorously pursue corruption allegations, promising that all cases would be pursued to a conclusive end.
The protest underscores the public’s growing concern over accountability in governance and the demand for transparency in addressing allegations of financial misconduct.
Former Governor, Bello Matawalle, has been embroiled in a controversy surrounding the alleged theft of over ₦70 billion from the state’s funds, as uncovered by the EFCC. However, in a surprising turn of events, the case was abruptly closed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated him as the Minister of State for Defence.
This development has raised eyebrows and sparked outrage among many, who are questioning the timing and motives behind the closure of the case.
The EFCC had previously accused Matawalle of misappropriating billions of naira meant for the development of Zamfara State, leaving many to wonder how he was deemed fit for a ministerial position despite the serious allegations against him.
