Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced that the total value of properties destroyed during the #EndBadGovernance protest in the state amounts to ₦1 billion. Among the losses, Governor Yusuf noted that important legal documents pertaining to alleged corruption charges against former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje were stolen by the miscreants who carried out the vandalism.
Governor Yusuf made this revelation during an on-site assessment visit to the Kano State High Court, which was vandalized by thugs during the nationwide protest. He was accompanied on the inspection by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Isah Dederi, Chief Registrar of the High Court, Abdullahi Ado Bayero, and several High Court judges.
In a statement signed by Sanusi Bature, the governor’s media aide, and made available to *BusinessDay*, it was disclosed that Governor Yusuf described the vandalism as a “masterminded and stage-managed mission,” where hired thugs targeted documents linked to the corruption allegations against former governor Ganduje.
It was noted that the hearing of these corruption charges was ongoing at the State High Court before the incident occurred.
“It is very unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalize one of our historic public buildings, with the aim of derailing the corruption charges against the Acting National Chairman of APC and former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family, and aides,” the governor stated.
He further explained that the miscreants caused extensive damage across all units of the High Court, including the office of the state Chief Judge. The destruction included theft of office equipment, damage to offices, burning of cars, and other acts of vandalism, resulting in losses estimated at over one billion naira.
Following the inspection, Governor Yusuf urged the youth of Kano State to resist being used by detractors to incite violence. He assured that the judiciary, as the last hope of the common man, would be protected at all costs. The governor directed the immediate rehabilitation of the court building and called for enhanced security measures to safeguard the facility.
Governor Yusuf also extended his condolences to the Chief Judge, Dije Abdu Aboki, and the entire judiciary for the unfortunate incident, urging them to persevere and recover the lost documents to ensure justice for the common man.
Lastly, the governor expressed his appreciation to the people of Kano State for their continued support of the current administration, praying for sustained peace, stability, prosperity, and economic development in the state.
