The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerians, especially those enduring the hardships of broken promises, exploitation, and corruption, to remain hopeful and committed to the future of the country.
In a statement issued on Independence Day, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed solidarity with workers and citizens, acknowledging their resilience and sacrifices despite repeated betrayals by political leaders.
“On the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, we extend our congratulations to all Nigerians, particularly the workers, for their perseverance and unyielding spirit in the face of overwhelming political failures at various levels,” Ajaero said.
He urged struggling Nigerians not to lose hope, despite being burdened by years of unfulfilled promises and systemic exploitation. He encouraged them to continue to demand justice within the boundaries of the law, resisting any attempts to subvert democratic norms and values by the political elite.
“It should now be evident to all that our political leaders will not act in the best interest of the people unless they are compelled to do so,” Ajaero added.
He also issued a stern warning to the political class, cautioning against further erosion of democratic principles and institutions. “For too long, the actions or inactions of the political elite have led us to this point. It is time for a change, and it can no longer be business as usual,” he said, calling for a renewed commitment to genuine democratic governance.
Ajaero concluded by urging political leaders to chart a new course and make this moment the beginning of a fresh, more accountable political era.
