Nigerian and foreign students took to the streets of London on Saturday, staging a demonstration outside the Nigerian High Commission to protest President Bola Tinubu’s “anti-poor policies.” The protesters, comprised of both Nigerian and international students, called on the Nigerian government to reverse policies they argue disproportionately affect the country’s most vulnerable populations. They also demanded the release of individuals detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.
The protest was organized by a socialist student group known as ‘Fight for Socialism.’ Participants held placards with messages such as “Drop all charges and release protesters” and “Reverse all anti-poor policies,” underscoring their discontent with the government’s approach to governance, particularly its impact on Nigeria’s economically disadvantaged citizens.
Among the key demands was the immediate release of those arrested during the #EndBadGovernance movement, a protest movement that has continued to call for systemic reforms in Nigeria, particularly in light of widespread economic hardship. The protesters voiced concerns that Tinubu’s policies, including fuel subsidy removals and other austerity measures, are deepening poverty and making life increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians.
The protest took place at WC2N 5BX, London, drawing attention from passersby and international observers.
