The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has described as preposterous, belief that its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, may soon join the presidential race for 2023 election, as it will not happen.
Reacting to reports in some quarters that Nigerians should not be surprised if INEC Chairman joins presidential race or people urging him to do so, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, in a statement said the INEC Chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair and credible elections.
According to the statement, his constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election are onerous enough for him to even contemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality and his personal principles.
The statement emphasised that the chairman will continue to discharge his responsibilities without affection for, or ill will against, any political party or candidate.
