Today, a throng of demonstrators surged into the national headquarters of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, demanding the immediate resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman. This outcry follows Ganduje’s recent suspension by a faction of his ward executives and allegations of bribery leveled against him by the Kano State government.
Amid chants of solidarity and a sea of banners proclaiming “Ganduje must resign” and “Restore APC chairmanship to North Central,” the protesters urged President Bola Tinubu and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to heed their call and return party leadership to their region.
This fervor comes just two days after the Forum of APC State Chairmen voiced their support for Ganduje, affirming his leadership during a visit to the party’s national secretariat.
The tension escalated when a faction of the Ganduje Ward in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano issued a fresh suspension against the former governor, an action the ruling party attributed to impostors allegedly backed by the state government.
Speaking to the press in Abuja, the demonstrators, under the banner of Concerned North Central APC Stakeholders, decried Ganduje’s prolonged tenure as a violation of the party’s zoning principles.
Mohammed Mahmud Saba, the leader of the protesters, asserted that unlike the 37 APC state chairmen, the North Central region had passed a vote of no confidence in Ganduje and demanded his immediate resignation.
Saba emphasized the region’s sense of betrayal, citing the hijacking of the APC national chairman position following the departure of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, despite the region’s significant support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
“We, the North Central APC Concerned Stakeholders, demand the immediate resignation of Dr. Umar Ganduje and call for the restoration of zoning arrangements made by the 2022 National Convention,” Saba declared. “It is imperative that all governors elected on the APC platform in the North Central mobilize against this impunity until Ganduje steps down as national chairman.”
