Zamfara: FCET Lecturers Commence Strike, Demand Removal of Provost

Lecturers at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Gusau in Zamfara State have initiated an indefinite strike, urging the immediate removal of Mrs Hauwa’u Gimbiya Mukhtar Abdulkarim from her position as Provost.

In a statement released to the press on Wednesday, signed by Dr Abdullahi Muhammad, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of the College, the lecturers asserted that Mrs Abdulkarim lacked the necessary qualifications for the role and insisted on her resignation for them to resume work.

They emphasized their refusal to work under a provost deemed unqualified and unsuitable by the Federal Ministry of Education, stating that all academic and administrative activities would remain suspended until the ministry’s directive regarding Mrs Abdulkarim’s appointment was implemented.

The statement highlighted concerns raised by a human rights group, Equity Alliance, regarding the authenticity of Mrs Abdulkarim’s qualifications, prompting the union to await the ministry’s decision before her assumption of duty.

Furthermore, they stressed the violation of the federal Colleges of Education’s conditions of service and advertised requirements for the provost position, reaffirming their commitment to upholding the institution’s integrity and adherence to the rule of law.
